Stamping vs Sheet Metal Fabrication — Which Should You Quote?
Stamping and sheet metal fabrication are both valid routes for flat and formed metal parts. The right choice depends on quantity, design stability, and how often your drawing changes — not on factory marketing language.
Choose metal stamping when
- Annual volume is high enough to amortise die tooling (often 500+ pcs, depending on size)
- Part design is stable for 12–24 months or longer
- Cycle time and unit cost matter more than tooling upfront cost
- The part is a clip, bracket, shim, washer, or progressive-formed panel
Choose sheet metal fabrication when
- Volumes are lower or designs change frequently
- You need laser cutting, one-off prototypes, or many variants from one base material
- Tooling budget should stay minimal
- Welded assemblies or complex bend sequences are required
Combined routes
Some programmes use laser cutting for prototypes, then move to stamping dies for production once the design is frozen. Partform can quote both stages through Qingdao partners.
RFQ checklist
Include material, thickness, annual quantity, burr/deburr requirements, and finish (zinc plate, powder coat, etc.). For New Zealand or Australian delivery, note your destination city so lead time and freight can be included.
