Open-Die vs Closed-Die Forging — Which Route Fits Your Part?

Open-die and closed-die forging are both available through Partform’s Qingdao partner network. The right choice depends on part size, volume, alloy, and whether you need near-net-shape accuracy or a simpler rolled/forged blank for further machining.

Closed-die forging — best when

  • Part geometry repeats at production volume
  • You need consistent weight and grain flow in a defined shape
  • Typical driveline, structural, and automotive aftermarket components
  • Die cost is acceptable against annual quantity

Open-die forging — best when

  • Parts are larger or heavier with simpler symmetry
  • Low-to-medium volume does not justify full closed-die tooling
  • You need a forged blank for subsequent CNC finish machining
  • Ring rolling or shaft-like forms are involved
