CNC Machining vs Forging — Which Process Fits Your Part?

CNC machining and forging solve different engineering problems. Partform helps Oceania buyers choose the right Qingdao partner process based on volume, strength needs, and geometry — not factory marketing claims.

Choose CNC machining when

  • Volumes are low to moderate (prototypes through a few thousand pieces)
  • Geometry has complex pockets, threads, or tight internal features
  • You need fast design iteration without die tooling
  • Material is aluminium or machinable bar/plate stock

Choose forging when

  • Part strength and fatigue life are critical (driveline, structural loads)
  • Annual volumes justify die investment
  • Grain flow and directional strength matter
  • Near-net shape reduces material waste versus machining from solid

Cost and lead time

CNC often wins on tooling cost for early programmes. Forging becomes economical as volumes rise because cycle time per piece drops once dies are proven. Partform quotes both routes when your drawing allows either approach.

Honest supply note

Both processes are performed in Qingdao partner facilities. Partform provides New Zealand–based supply coordination — we do not manufacture in New Zealand.
